While studying for my master’s degree in psychology I had a special interest in emotional disorders such as stress, anxiety, depression and panic disorders.
When I started going to college I loaded up my course load to the maximum amount of units that I could take at once. I also put a lot of stress on myself to maintain a 4.0. My stress level was at it’s max and while sitting in class one day I had a panic attack for the first time. I remember sitting in my desk, my heart started beating very fast, I felt light headed, I could hear my heart beating in my ears. It was the scariest thing ever because I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t want to make a scene so I sat there and took deep breaths. Eventually I felt normal again. This happened a few more times during the course of my education but I knew what to do.
The problem with panic disorder is that if you can’t get it under control it can keep occurring and minor things can set it off. While working on my thesis for my Master’s degree, I worked with a psychiatrist and we used fMRI to look at the brain imaging in people with panic disorder (while showing them pictures of different faces). People with panic disorder would show increased activation in the emotional centers of the brain even when looking at faces showing a fear response.
Many people end up on medications to help control their emotional responses. Medications don’t work right away, they include many side effects and can cause additional emotional disorders (especially when trying to get the dosage correct). There are studies showing alternative therapies to be very effective for emotional concerns.
Essential oils in particular are gaining popularity due to their fast action on the brain (through our sense of smell). I found a research article that I would love to share with you.
“The SLO (standardized lavender extract) product exhibits many desirable properties of an anxiolytic agent, including a calming effect without sedation, as well as a lack of dependence, tolerance, or withdrawal. SLO has a relatively benign side effect profile in short-term studies, and its onset of efficacy is more rapid than current first-line agents. Evidence from multiple high-quality randomized trials suggests a role for SLO in the treatment of anxiety disorders. The favorable safety and efficacy profile of SLO makes it a reasonable alternative to consider in patients with anxiety disorders.”
