Digestive Concerns? New Research!

My educational background is largely focused on research and statistics so I always get excited when I find new research articles on essential oils. I found an article today that I wanted to share with you because I also love peppermint essential oil

According to a new pilot study on 38 patients from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). The research, published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences earlier this year, found that 63% of patients with disorders of the esophagus that resulted in difficulty swallowing and non-cardiac chest pain felt better after using peppermint essential oil. The pilot study found that those who took peppermint oil prior to eating felt better after meals than those who didn’t. DIY Bubble Bath… Perfect Way to Relax on Mother’s Day!

My kids LOVE bubble bath… in fact, the more bubbles the better! When bubbles start getting low they start begging me to add more bubbles. Bubble baths are also relaxing after a long day or when you want some quiet / calm time to yourself.

I didn’t give my kids bubble baths very often because it wasn’t easy to find a chemical free version. I was especially careful about using bubble bath because this wasn’t a product that washes off quickly like shampoo or body wash. This was something they were going to literally soak in for 20+ minutes allowing the ingredients a better opportunity to be “soaked in” through the skin. They usually don’t have a shower after the bubble bath either so it will stay on the skin for even longer. So whatever was in the bath, stays on their skin.

The FDA requires that a warning should be put on all ‘foaming detergent bath products’: “Excessive use or prolonged exposure may cause irritation to skin and urinary tract”.

Why is that? Well, let’s have a look at the ingredients commonly found in kids’ bubble baths.

Common ingredients in bubble baths

Surfactants – to make bubbles.

Emulsifiers – to stop ingredients from separating in the bottle.

Emollients – to make your skin feel soft after the bath.

Fragrance – to make your bath smell good.

Colors – fun for kids.

Preservatives – to keep a long shelf life.

Ingredients to avoid in bubble bath

1. Fragrance – unless it’s essential oil based, I avoid fragrance. Manufacturers don’t have to disclose what’s in perfumes. And so fragrances can contain suspected allergens and sensitizers, phthalates, neurotoxins and endocrine disrupters.

2. Phthalates – often found in perfume ingredients, and you won’t know because manufacturers don’t have to tell you.

3. Propylene glycol – used as a humectant (to lock moisture into your skin), an emulsifier and as a preservative. It can cause skin irritation and is associated with allergic contact dermatitis. Not an ingredient that I want to be soaking in!
4. Synthetic colors – FD&C or D&C colors are just in a product to make it look pretty. These are coal tar derivatives (petroleum by product) – contamination concerns.
5. Sulphates – these are common surfactants. SLS used to be very common, but manufacturers aren’t using it as much because it’s an irritant.

6. Cocamidopropyl betaine – there are contamination concerns (nitrosamines being the main concern). That’s why it’s suspected of being an irritant. Lots of companies say it’s ‘derived from coconut’ and so it’s natural. However, it’s so far derived from coconut that it’s basically synthetic. Besides contamination concerns, cocamidopropyl betaine is also a penetration enhancer. It means that other chemicals can get into your skin more easily. And that’s concern if the other ingredients you’re exposed to are toxic.

7. PEG’s – can cause skin irritations, and shouldn’t be used on broken skin. Also, there are concerns that PEGs can be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane.

8. Cocamide DEA – surfactant and emulsifier which scores a 7 in EWG. It’s a skin toxicant and allergen. And it’s linked to organ system toxicity. Plus it’s considered to be a carcinogen, and there are concerns that it can be contaminated with nitrosamines. That makes for one toxic tub!

9. Polysorbate 20 – another surfactant and emulsifier. This one is problematic because it can be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane.
10. Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) and Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) – widely associated with contact dermatitis, especially in leave on products (like bubble bath).

11. Phenoxyethanol – can cause skin and lung irritation, and there is evidence of organ toxicity.

12. Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate – scores a 6 in the EWG database, because it may release formaldehyde. Although it is derived from a natural source, it’s synthetic, not natural.

Make Your Own Bubble Bath!

Combine:
1 Bottle of Natural Dishwashing Soap such as ecover (this is a great option for everyday dish washing)
¼ Cup of Glycerine
1 Tablespoon of Sugar
10 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil or AromaTouch

Mix together all ingredients gently until sugar is dissolved.

Store in container and enjoy in your next warm bath filled with luxurious bubbles. The secret to this recipe is the glycerine and sugar that create big, long, lasting bubbles. DIY Body Wash

Yesterday, I talked about toxic chemicals lurking in our everyday products. Today, I want to shed light on a specific ingredient that most of you will come in contact daily that is found in your body wash… Formaldehyde!

Yes, it is the same stuff that is used to embalm dead bodies! And here’s the kicker — you won’t actually see the word “formaldehyde” listed in a list of product ingredients…except perhaps in a few remaining brands of nail polish. The cosmetics and personal care industry is tricky. They disguise that word in the list of ingredients because they know you probably won’t buy something if you know what’s really in it.

Formaldehyde hides behind the following ingredient names. If you see these on any labels, put the product down.

quaternium-15

DMDM hydantoin

imidazolidinyl urea

diazolidinyl urea

sodium hydroxymethylglycinate

2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3 diol (Bronopol)

glyoxal

oxaldehyde

Why is it such a big deal?

🧐 Formaldehyde is recognized by the EPA as a carcinogen.

🧐 It’s linked to lung cancers, Hodgkin lymphoma and leukemia, and myeloid leukemia.

🧐 It permeates through inhalation and can also cause eye, nose, and throat irritation; reproductive and developmental toxicity; asthma; neurologic and behavioral toxicity; and immunological toxicity.

🤯 And get this. It’s banned for use in cosmetics in Sweden and Japan.

235 ml glass pump bottle
½ cup unscented castile soap

Instructions

Mother’s Day DIY (Day 2)

We live in a world full of chemicals and most women don’t realize that they are putting it on their face daily as their foundation. How do you know if your foundation is toxic?? The easiest way to figure it out is to look at the ingredient list. If it’s not on the actual bottle (often it’s on the box that it comes in and not on the actual foundation), look up your product online and find the ingredient list there. Here are a few common toxic ingredients to look for in foundation:

1. Parabens

2. Phthalates

3. Fragrance

4. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and/or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

5. BHT

6. Retinyl palmitate and Retinol (aka, Vitamin A)

7. Lead

8.Formaldehyde

I love that there are now several awesome resources out there that we can use to figure out where our products sit on the scale of safe or not. The EWG (Environmental Working Group) has an amazing source on their site called the Skin Deep Database that you can search for products and get a super fast answer! Not every product in the world is in there, but there are a lot.

Another great resource is the Think Dirty app which I have on my phone so I can quickly search a product if I need to! Again, it doesn’t have every thing, but you can find most big brands.

Negative Effects Of Toxic Foundation
Unless you instantly get a rash or breakout, it’s sometimes hard to know how and if our makeup, foundation or skincare products are actually affecting us. Why? Because the majority of it is happening internally and we usually don’t know until much later.

For the base:
1 cup of arrowroot powder
2-4 drops Tea Tree essential oil

Add one or a combination of:
Cocoa powder
Ground cinnamon
Nutmeg
Bronze mica powder

Instructions:
1. Start with a base of arrowroot powder in a small bowl. Add Tea Tree essential oil and mix until combined.
2. Slowly add in one powder or a combination of the options until you reach your desired tone.

NOTE: This can vary from 1 tsp. for light skin and 1 tbsp. for dark skin.
TIP: If you want more of a compact foundation rather than a powder, you can add some Fractionated Coconut Oil to the mixture and press it into a compact. Start with 5 drops and continue adding until reaches your desired texture.

Mother’s Day DIY – Day 1

dōTERRA Mother’s Day DIY Series Day 1 💜

For the next 5 days, I will be sharing our favorite DIY’s that will be sure to bring a smile to your mom’s face on Mother’s Day.

Today is DIY Wild Orange Body Scrub! Use this scrub in the shower, bath, or as an everyday hand cleanser, and enjoy the benefits of smooth, vibrant skin.

Ingredients
1 handful slivered almonds
1 orange peel
1 cup of dōTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil
3–5 drops Wild Orange essential oil

Instructions
1. Add almonds, orange peel, Fractionated Coconut Oil, and Wild Orange essential oil into a food processor and mix until ingredients are well combined.
2. Store in an air-tight glass container and use 1–2 tablespoons as needed.
Note: Avoid contact with UV rays for up to 12 hours after applying citrus oils to the skin. Other Essential Oil Options that won’t cause skin sensitivity include peppermint, spearmint, or eucalyptus.
